As Inuit tradition is essentially oral, in 1987 the Avataq Cultural Centre began an important research program aiming to document Inuit genealogical data in Nunavik.

The goals of the program were to reinforce family identity and to prevent intra-family marriage. Since 1987, we have compiled over 18,000 Inuit family lines in Nunavik.
