1st AVATAQ Cultural Institute Fundraiser:
$100,000 FOR INUIT ART, CULTURE AND LANGUAGE
Montreal, December 6, 2012 – The AVATAQ Cultural Institute can say “mission accomplished!” AVATAQ’s very first fundraiser, with top Nunavik policy makers, the business community and the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Élizabeth Larouche, as well as Inuit representatives from the 14 communities in Québec’s North, the Institute has raised $100,000, fully achieving its ambitious objective for this first public fundraising campaign. In all, nearly 300 people took part in this great event where artistic performances by Elisapie Isaac, Akinisie Sivuaraapik, Taqralik Partridge, the Nunavik Youth Theater and the young talents of the Pivallianiq-KMHB Hip-hop Club took centre stage. This event will certainly become a tradition showcasing every year the importance we place on the preservation and vibrancy of the art, culture and language of the Inuit people.
Since 1980, the Avataq Cultural Institute has been working to protect the language and promote the culture and identity of the Inuit people of Nunavik (Northern Québec) so that future generations can thrive from the rich heritage passed down by their ancestors. The Institute is a non-profit organization mandated by Nunavik’s Elders’ Conference.
