Taking part in the preservation of Nunavik’s heritage

By Pierre M. Desrosiers

Joanassie Inukpuk from Inukjuak has been involved in preserving the cultural heritage of Nunavik for many years. During summer 2012, a salvage excavation project was being done in the new housing area in Inukjuak. When the project was running out of money, he volunteered to continue working with Tommy Weetaluktuk until the last minute, in order to save as much as possible of the archaeological remains. Also, for more than 10 years, he has constantly reported on any new archaeological sites that he discovered during hunting trips around the region. Joanassie is always careful not to disturb archaeological sites. He records them on a map and, to document the objects found on the surface, he takes pictures of them and leaves them in place so that they can one day be properly recorded by archaeologists. Nunavik definitively needs more people like him to protect the archaeological sites all over the region. Please do not hesitate to collaborate with us if you also want to protect and preserve Nunavik’s rich heritage!
