The Inuktituutniup Saturtaugasuaurninga of Avataq Cultural Institute is presently hosting a two-week youth theatre workshop in Inukjuak- July 5 to 16, 2010.
Facilitated by Onira Lussier and Marie Deaudelin, of Vidanges en Cavale, the present workshop is the follow-up to two other workshops that took place last fall. This edition brings together more than 20 youth, ages 14 to 30, from most of the communities across Nunavik.
Having experienced the success of the two previous workshops, we are convinced that training of this type is very much needed in Nunavik. Our primary goal is to instill a love for theatre, to better train the youth in the theatre arts within their own communities.
The intensive program for these two weeks is defined in two parts. The first week is dedicated to the introducing theatrical techniques, such as the clown, improvisation, masque neutre, etc. This brings us to the second week of creation focussed on the Inuit culture and language. In attendance are Avataq’s language analysts, Adamie Qalingo and Moses Novalinga ; Inuktitut Language Department director Zebedee Nungak and Eyuka Pinguatuk, Inuktitut teacher. At the end of the two weeks the group will present a new work in Inuktitut.
At the same time we are discussing the possibility of the participants continuing theatre activities in their respective communities, for which we want to offer support.
It seems the dream of creating a Nunavik theatre group is moving closer to realization!
