Employment opportunities : Museology Technician / NEW DEADLINE

AVATAQ is currently seeking a dynamic candidate for the following position: Museology Technician (posting for JBNQA beneficiaries only) in order to perform the storage, the preventive conservation and the documentation of the collection, as well as cultural animation.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Museology, the Museology Technician will maintain a sound management of the museum reserve (Qarmaq):

Collections management

- Collaborate in collections management related activities - acquisitions, loans, objects input and output, access to collections - and administer associated management tools;

- Update the collections management system (acquisition, alienation, inventory);

- Apply the procedures, the documentation standards and perform the classification of the collections;

- Use tools (paper and electronic forms) corresponding to service activities (monitoring of objects input and output);

- Ensure the protection of the Institute's collections following the standards of preventive conservation, and also by transmitting them to the reserve users;

- Ensure a safe and supervised access to the reserve, according to the terms of the Institute’s access guidelines.

Conservation

- Respect the preventive conservation schedule and perform monitoring activities mentioned therein;

- Monitor the physical and environmental conditions of the reserve;

- Note the state of objects, write the condition reports and, if necessary, photograph objects;

- Use the proper conservation materials and keep up to date on that subject;

- Perform preventive inspections of objects and conservation areas;

- Recommend, if necessary, intervention or restoration;

- Make boxes, packaging, adequate supports or provide the necessary equipment for the objects handling for transport and storage.

Cultural animation

- Develop scenarios for reserve tours aimed to different types of audiences (Nunavimmiut, Inuit organizations, researchers and the general public);

- Develop educational tools and educational paths for Nunavimmiut interested in the Nunavik heritage and/or Nordic Museology;

- Develop and implement information or initiation workshops for the conservation and enhancement of heritage assets for Nunavimmiut.

Job requirements:

- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Museology milieu and/or teaching of a an artistic disciplinary, and/or cultural animation;

- Strong knowledge of Nordic environment and a keen interest for Inuit culture;

- Knowledge of FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Office in a Mac environment;

- Ease in expressing in public;

- Mastery of Inuktitut and English, written and spoken. Knowledge of French is an asset;

- Detail oriented, organized and punctual;

- Willing to travel in Nunavik and elsewhere for stays that can extend up to two weeks;

- Strong communicational skills and team work.

Additional information:

- Working schedule: 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday (28 hours/week);

- Salary: $18.00/hr (salary subject to change after probation);

- Location: Qarmaq – Avataq’s museum reserve, Montréal.
