The Gazetteer of Nunavik Place Names (Quebec, Canada) by Ludger Müller-Wille, in collaboration with the Nunavik Elders and the Avataq Cultural Institute, was published in 1987. Copies are available at Avataq.

Published maps

Place names maps at 1 : 50 000 scale, are available for Kuujjuaraapik, Umiujaq, Inukjuak, Kangiqsujuaq, Kuujjuaq et Kangiqsualujjuaq and immediate surroundings. Some regional maps at 1 : 100 000 scale are also available. See the publication list.

Maps still to come

The following community maps are waiting to be published: Akulivik, Puvirnituq, Ivujivik, Salluit, Quaqtaq, Kangirsuk, Tasiujaq and Aupaluk. The geographical coordinates are already integrated in Makivik and the Kativik Regional Government GIS databases. They will eventually be included in the GIS systems used by Nunavik hunters and Help and Rescue Teams.

Applications

The place names retrieved through this project have become an essential resource for teaching about the environment and the history of places. They have become indispensable for hunting and fishing (some names identify the best fishing and hunting locations in a given region), and may facilitate rescue when a person is in distress or lost in the land. Place names are also very useful for archaeologists since they often refer to camp sites and hunting locations, which may reveal new sites. The meaning of some place names may also refer to a long ago past when the location was used by Inuit ancestors.
