By Daniel Gendron, archaeologist
In March 2006, Avataq learned that the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) awarded to the Department of Archaeology a CURA research grant (Community-University Research Alliance). This grant is $1,000,000.00 for a five-year research project. However, before Avataq could get this grant, it had to prove that it could manage public money for research. Now, it is done. The project will start at the beginning of October with the first organisational meeting between the Institute and its university partners. The committee of direction will be created during this first meeting and it will be composed of two Avataq representatives, including the CURA director, Daniel Gendron, two university representatives, and two members from the Nunavik communities. More on this project real soon.
