Nunavik 2000

< Previous page

On the occasion of the First Peoples’ Festival Land in Sights, NUNAVIK 2000 celebrated the creativity and expressivity found in the sculptural arts from Nunavik for over half a century. This exhibition presented a dual perspective on Nunavimmiut art. It showcased early and recent work, and emphasized the journey towards the new millennium by comparing Inuit art at its beginnings with more recent works marketed by the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec.

Thanks to the works held in the Inuit Art Collection, the exhibit allowed viewers to relive the extraordinary birth of contemporary art in Northern Quebec. In particular, the exhibit shone a light on the unique and innovative character of the sculptors of the 1940s and ‘50s, whose artistic vision created what we now recognize as Inuit art. This, the first large-scale exhibition mounted by Avataq, was an exceptional opportunity for the general public to discover the riches of Nunavimmiut culture.
